The tournaments take place over a period of several weeks, during which all matches are played. Review of Home Tour tournaments #6: Efler wins three cushion, Innarella triumphs in the five pins competition

The résumé of the Home Tour three cushion and five pins tournaments #6 is mixed. On the one hand, both competitions were exciting right up to the end and ended with extremely close podium decisions. On the other hand, unfortunately not all matches could be played, which led to walkover results and always comes with a bitter aftertaste. The first appearance of the German junior star Amir Ibraimov in an MWS tournament was eagerly awaited, starting in the three cushion competition as a promising title contender (more on this in Reigning Junior World Championship runner-up Ibraimov challenges Home Tour record champion Efler). In the end, things turned out differently. Despite beating record champion Andreas Efler, it was not enough for Ibraimov to make it onto the podium, partly because the 2023 World Junior Vice Champion had to forfeit two of his games without a fight.

In the concurrently held five pins tournament, another prominent player, Ernst-Jan Driessen, was caught off guard. Due to technical problems with his Dutch MWS location in Helmond, some of his games had to be rated as uncontested draws. The dominator of the previous five pins tournaments also conceded two match defeats and thus missed out on reaching the podium.

Despite these incidents, other athletes delivered top sporting performances and deservedly finished at the top. Andreas Efler celebrated his 20th Home Tour triumph and Gerardo Innarella of Switzerland won his first Tour title – we offer them both our warmest congratulations!

The podium of the Home Tour three cushion tournament #6:

  1. Efler, Andreas (AT / Hinterbrühl): 14 match points, AVG 1.279, HR 11 | € 150 prize money
  2. Schmied, Georg (AT / Rosenburg-Mold): 14 match points, AVG 0.914, HR 7 | € 90 prize money
  3. Gajs, Zoran (AT / Vienna): 14 match points, AVG 0.911, HR 6 | € 60 prize money

  3. Riml, Jimmy (AT / Innsbruck): 8 wins, set delta +4, sets 12:8 | € 60 prize money

Release of new ELO regulations, new player profiles with performance trends

ELO rating systems, which originally come from chess and have now been adapted for many other sports, try to reflect the playing strengths of the players as objectively as possible. For each match, the playing strengths of the players are put in relation to each other in order to calculate the athletes' probability of victory. Playing strengths are measured in ranking points — the more points a player has, the stronger he/she is and the higher he/she is in the rankings. These probabilities are used to calculate the ranking points that can be awarded in a match. The winner gains ranking points, the loser loses ranking points.

If two similarly strong players play against each other, then the gain of points for the winner as well as the loss of points for the loser are in the middle point range. If a clearly weaker player according to ranking list points wins against a clearly better one, then the weaker player gains a lot of ranking points and the stronger one has to give up a lot of ranking points. If a player who is clearly stronger according to ranking list points wins against a clearly weaker player, then the stronger player gains very few ranking points and the weaker player has to lose very few ranking points.

A separate ELO ranking is maintained for each discipline, incorporating all MWS Home Tour individual events from September 2022 and other selected MWS individual tournaments – as specified in the respective tournament invitations. What is new is that a new ranking list will be published for the respective discipline after each completed tournament (instead of after every 3 tournaments as before). The admission criteria were relaxed when the new regulations came into force, so that a player now only needs a minimum of 5 matches in the 3 most recent tournaments to be listed as active in this ranking and thus be able to participate in the bonus distribution – all other players are listed as passive and are thus excluded from the bonus distribution. The entry ranking score of a player is 5000 points in the discipline-specific first tournament of this player.

A separate bonus pot is kept for each discipline ranking, starting from Three Cushion Home Tour #7, Five Pins Home Tour #7, One Cushion Home Tour #1 and Balkline 47/2 Home Tour #1. When this pot reaches € 250,- it is distributed among the top-ranked players in that ranking according to the following key: 1st place: 30% | 2nd place: 25% | 3rd place: 20% | 4th place: 15% | 5th place: 10%. In addition, there is a cross-discipline youth development pot. The height of the bonuses that go into a discipline bonus pot and the youth development pot is regulated in the respective tournament announcement.
