On 19 October 2024, MWS & Night Café joined forces to hold the first competition of their newly established Green Cities Billiards Tour (GCBT) – an innovative tournament format that aims to promote environmentally friendly sporting events. This was the final test run for the GCBT, which starts in spring 2025. What made this event special was that it brought together four different billiards clubs in three different countries, all connected online thanks to advanced MWS technology. This allowed players to compete in their matches between the different clubs remotely.
CO₂ reduction, match by match
The main goal of the Green Cities Billiards Tour is to reduce CO₂ emissions by eliminating the need for travel and allowing players to compete online from their local clubs. By using the MWS system for remote billiards, players from any MWS location worldwide can participate in the GCBT tournaments, thus promoting a more sustainable way of playing billiards. The enormous potential for scaling up by interconnecting different venues makes it possible to hold tournaments with very high numbers of participants in one day.
An exciting tournament with a strong line-up
The quarter-finals were the highlight of the tournament and showed the full potential of the MWS online platform. The players competed against each other online at their respective locations and delivered impressive performances while reducing their carbon footprint.

MWS coach Andreas Efler put in an outstanding performance and brought the title to Vienna. His skill and precision were undeniable throughout the tournament. Max Augenstein from the Stuttgart location, an up-and-coming young talent in the billiards world, secured a well-deserved second place with a powerful performance after beating a phalanx of well-known competitors in the internal preliminary round. Kenan Canturk from Zurich and Jimmy Riml from Innsbruck rounded off the podium, both showing solid performances and making the fans at their locations proud.
What's next?
The GCBT competitions are designed as one-day tournaments. The medium-term goal is to have several hundred participants per tournament, as well as steady growth in prize money and audience numbers. The preliminary rounds will be played locally at the participating MWS locations, and from the main round onwards, the best players from the preliminary rounds at the respective locations will compete against each other remotely via the MWS system. Over the entire tournament day matches and, of course, all remote matches in the main round will be broadcast live on the MWS streaming platform.
This Tour is just the beginning of a new chapter for online billiards. After the successful debut of the Green Cities Billiards Tour, MWS & Night Café plan to organize further environmentally friendly events together. The future of billiards looks bright and greener.
